BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The University Board is the highest decision-making body at Capilano University. It is responsible for reviewing the performance of the institution and for approving most University policy. Tuition fees, Capilano's operational budget, and other fees are determined by the Board.

The Board is comprised of eight members of the community who are appointed by the provincial government. In addition to these external members there are four elected reps: one faculty, one support staff member, and two students who are elected by their respective constituency groups. The University President and the Chair of the Senate also sit on the board without vote.

The two student representatives on the University Board, who represent the membership of the Capilano Students’ Union, are elected each year during the spring semester. These individuals work with the CSU University Relations Committee and Educational Issues Committee to increase the involvement of members in the decision making process.

The student reps on the Board of Governors make decisions on many University issues. A lot of time has been spent - especially in the last few years - on attempting to reduce financial barriers for low income students. This has mostly been through advocacy to the Board and administrators to reduce tuition fees and to increase the amount of financial aid available to low income students. This has been especially important in recent years due to large budget surpluses the University has posted.
Some success has been made in adding funds to the student financial aid budget though it has become difficult to push for a halt to further increases in tuition.

If you’re interested in getting involved to help increase public access to education stop by the CSU and let your representatives know that you would like to help!
