ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
The Environmental Issues Committee is composed of people who feel strongly about decreasing their ecological footprint both as individuals and as a part of the greater student community.
We work to promote environmental health and integrate environmentally responsible practices into the Union, with the goal of environmental sustainability in mind, while involving as many students as possible. The committee deals with issues both local and global. The Environmental Issues Committee is always open to suggestions for new campaigns, programs, and services, and the committee provides a supportive forum for you to share your ideas.
Last year we addressed the importance surrounding recycling, alternate transportation, and sharing resources to minimize waste and maximize environmental awareness. We felt that our actions might inspire others to take part in these same significant steps towards sustainable living. The committee’s campaigns included hosting two clothing swaps, raising funds with live jazz performances for World Water Day, handing out eco friendly prizes to students who recycled on campus, organising an afternoon of DIY bike maintenance with a mechanic from Our Community Bikes, taking part in the national tuition fees protest, screening relevant films, and getting together with faculty members of differing departments to create a dynamic event on the Spring Equinox, called “Bike to School.” The event showcased bike route maps, prizes from many outdoors local shops to the area, and much more.
The committee’s passion towards recycling is emphasized by the posters you will see around campus this year, reminding us all of just how invigorating environmentalism can be, and to kindly demonstrate that we can all reduce our waste by simply using the recycling bins. There is an EIC notice board in the Library (LB) building where you can read up on meetings and events around campus, so get involved! The committee welcomes you and your ideas for ecological preservation and adventure.
