5 Days for Homeless is COMING to Capilano U!

Hello Friends,

The Social Justice Committee is excited to announce that the planning for our spring campaign "5 Days for the Homeless" has commenced.

5 Days for homeless will bring dialogue and demonstration to campus, with a minimum of three members of the Capilano community sleeping outside "homeless" on campus for 5 days.  Participants will attend all school commitments, however will only be able to accept food by donation, sleep outside in sleeping bags, and not leave campus. With a kick off event and the giving spirit of community members the 5 Days campaign aims to raise funds for the North Shore Youth Safe House.

In addition to this amazing campaign, we are organizing a speaker and event series leading up to and throughout the 5 days campaign. Through these events we hope to highlight the issues Vancouver faces with homelessness as well as empower people to get involved in effective and creative ways. We want to push this dialogue as far as we can, and make the Capilano community engaged and excited to do something! We hope you can help!

As we begin the organization and implementation of this rather large endeavor we need as much help as we can get! That's where you come in!

Want to be an all star and get more involved? Volunteer! Everyone has something to offer and 5 Days undoubtedly can use your unique skills! If you are interested in joining us, please email Teresa @ socialjustice@csu.bc.ca for more information.

Lastly, we are still looking for a few more participants! This is the experience of a life time and we are looking for individuals who are wanting to push themselves and have a desire to make a difference in their local community. You are cordially invited to donate blood January 16th @ Capilano University

On January 16th, 2012 the Social Justice Committee will be hosting its first blood drive. Located in the short term parking lot, the Canadian Blood Services will be bringing their blood mobile to take donations from willing students, staff, professors, and community members.

We invite you to join us! If you are interested we encourage you to reserve a spot by calling 1-888-236-6283. They can also answer any questions you may have regarding donating blood. Alternatively you can go to their website: blood.ca

It is important that when providing our campus with events such as this blood drive, that all aspects of the issue are highlighted. In addition to encouraging students to donate, and the importance of donating, we will also be informing students about other aspects including the controversial issues surrounding the strict criteria to donate, particularly the ban for men who have sex with men.
