Since
2003, the U-Pass Program has been responsible for reducing greenhouse gas
emissions by about 36,000 tonnes. This is the equivalent of removing 7,200 cars
from the road. We are excited to build on this success with the addition of
Capilano University.

The U-Pass at Capilano University
As a part of the provincial government's green initiative, Translink sponsored the Universal Buss Pass Program (U-Pass) to increase ridership on public transit. The Capilano Students' Union, Capilano University, and TransLink are proud to announce the implementation of the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) for the Spring 2009 term.
In October of 2007, Capilano University students voted 87% in favour of the U-Pass Program and the referendum enjoyed a high voter turnout during the week of October 1st to 5th, 2007.
The U-Pass is funded in part by a mandatory student fee of $128 per term. The U-Pass fee is automatically added to your student account when you are registered in one or more credit classes held at the North Vancouver campus and must be paid at the same time as your fees and tuition.
The program is mandatory for all eligible Capilano students and provides unlimited, all zone access to public transit in Metro Vancouver at a reduced cost. Once you have your U-Pass, you will not have to pay any additional fares and you will have:
- unlimited access to TransLink Bus (including Community Shuttles and West Vancouver Blue Busses), SkyTrain and SeaBus services (all zoned),
- a discount on a one-way fare, a return trip fare, a weekly ticket, or a 28-day ticket on the West Coast Express.
Your U-Pass is a transit card that shows your name, photo, and expiration date of the card. A new U-Pass will be issued each term in which you are an eligible enrolled student at Capilano.

How Did the Upass Come to Pass?
In
October of 2007, Capilano University students voted 87% in favour of
the U-Pass Program, with 960 voting yes and 122 voting no during the week of October 1st to 5th, 2007. The Capilano Students' Union can hold referendums and implement new fees under the University Act. There was a very high turn out based on our past elections and referendum
numbers. All students were informed of the vote by a general email that
was sent to student email accounts as well as notices, forums and
posters.
Can I get out of Paying for the Upass?
All students, with limited exceptions, who pay Capilano Students' Union
fees and attend classes at the North Vancouver campus at least one day
per week on average, will be assessed a mandatory U-Pass fee.
Similar to collective universal programs such as libraries, health care
and funding for post-secondary, the Upass program is universal,
everyone contributes and may receive the benefit of the service
regardless of the personal choice to use it.
